I tried a few different settings from 8 to 5 no matter how much I rowed my brains out I couldn't do better than 1:30 for a 500m set.

I used setting 7. 6 to 7 was the recommended setting on the main site. The number determines the simulated drag of the water (i.e. the choppier the water that day, the higher the equivalent number), but doesn't really allow you to go any faster.

This WOD was much more difficult than I expected. My legs are going to be angry tomorrow.

I thought it was going to be no big deal. Just 4 500m sprints I thought, dead by the end of my last set. If I only had more short burst endurance I would have killed this.

During my first set I was busting a 1:10 speed, then I had to take a rest in the middle of it because I could hardly breath. I did not believe those time posted on the main website, but I guess I have to now.
