Sorry I didn't mention anything about leg position, P. You seem to ride the exercise bike more than me. Whenever you set your seat height on a bike, it should be set so that the leg is essentially fully extended at the bottom of the stroke, just like your buddy said. It feels harder when you start out because your quads are so much stronger than your other leg muscles, but will make it easier later on as you take advantage of the leverage when your quads are getting tired.
